Questions

Why are my thumbnails poor quality? I want to print thumbnails from original files rather than just printing tiny thumbnails at low resolution.

If you print from the Thumbnail View, iView prints the thumbnail saved with the catalog. There is a hi-resolution option in the Print dialog box to improve the quality of this print.

Some applications, such as Photoshop, embed a small, low-quality thumbnail into the media file. Digital cameras do this as well. During import, iView renders that pre-existing "built-in" thumbnail and stores it in the catalog file. Maintaining this default setting makes importing fast, but the quality of your thumbnails will typically be poor.

To improve the quality of thumbnails, choose "Rebuild Thumbnail" in the Action Menu. This should substantially improve the quality of your previews.

To rebuild the thumbnails of the entire catalog, go to "Select All" from the Edit Menu before applying the "Rebuild Thumbnail" command.

If you set application with the "Ignore built-in thumbnails" enabled, next time you drag and drop or import images to a catalog, iView will create its own preview, rather than use the previews generated by the original application.

How do I print large thumbnails, i.e., 2 or 3 rows to fill a page rather than the small default size currently available?

Use the print dialog in the Media view and select the number of columns and rows from the Grid option in the Print dialog to fill the entire page.

How do I print a single image without printing the whole catalog?

To print a full image at hi-resolution, launch the Print dialog from the Media view, and us the Grid option to select one or more images on a page. Adjust the image size to a suitable size using the Size drop down menu. The Print dialog previews the current page and prints the range defined in the Print Box. To print a particular page only, click on the up and down arrow buttons at the bottom of the dialog and adjust the Range to Current Page.

How do I print a selection?

Make your selection of files, then choose Show Selected from the Find Menu (Shift-CMD-E). Then print your results.

How do I print to a file?

You will have to create a virtual printer. In the Chooser, select Apple's default print driver such as Laser Writer 8 or select AdobePS postscript driver. This will allow you to save the file to print later, or open the file with another editing application.

How do I print multi-layer or multi-page files, or a single frame within a movie?

Given that the original file is mounted, you can navigate through the different pages or layers of multiple page or composite files, using the arrow keys in the floating controller, which appears when you view these types of files from the Media View.

By default, iView prints the frame automatically assigned as a file's thumbnail. To print a particular layer or page within a composite file, even a particular frame within a movie, go to the layer or frame in Media View, then use "Rebuild Thumbnail' to place the current frame as the thumbnail. Then simply print.

This feature is useful for all Quark XPress, Photoshop, PDF, DICOM, and Fax files.

Can iView print posters?

iView prints any size, simply define the page size from the Page Setup dialog under the File Menu. This dialog is generated by your print drive and the print area size supported is determined by the capabilities of your printer. iView can be used with standard as well as Large Format Printers.

iView automatically adjusts the number of cells on a page relative to the size of the page. You can also manually adjust these by defining the number of cells you want on a page from the Grid option in the Print dialog.

Can I specify individual cell sizes?

iView automatically adjusts the number of cells on a page, relative to the image size predefined by the user initially on import.

You can manually adjust these by changing the settings from the drop down menu at the bottom of the application window or Print dialog box. If you choose a size larger than the original import, iView will need to rescan the original media files to regenerate the previews in the Thumbnail view.

You can also manually defining the number of cells you want on a page from the Grid option in the Print dialog and iView will adjust the size relative to the Page size setup.

Can I specify a non-standard print area size?

You can print using print templates to specify particular sizes. This is useful for printing different formats for CD, Zip, DVD, video jewel case covers, as well as non standard photo frames etc. For more information, see the Print Templates tutorial.
