Q&A » Importing Media

Import from Camera results in the wrong color profile (Mac).

iView MediaPro 3 uses Apple's 'Import from Camera' utility to import directly from the camera.

With your camera attached, please launch this utility (Applications Menu). Press 'Options...' and make sure that the Camera RGB profile option is selected in the 'Embed Color Sync Profile'.

You can now Quit 'Import from Camera' and the correct profile will be used when you use 'Import Items', 'From Camera' in iView MediaPro.

(Catalog size limits) Why would I not be able to import items to MediaPro?

Often items cannot be imported into MediaPro because the file format is not supported by iView MediaPro. Please check 'Catalog Importers', from the file menu, to make sure the type of media file being imported is selected for import. When trying to import files that already exist in a catalog it may appear as if they are not being imported. A file cannot exist twice in a catalog. If you import while seeing a restricted view of items in MediaPro it may also appear as if the items have not been imported. It is important to realize that items may be imported but if you have a keyword selected in the Organize panel (for instance) you will still see only items with that keyword after the import.

Items cannot be imported when the limits are reached. A single iView MediaPro catalog is limited to approximately 128,000 items and 2GB in size. Media Items will not import after a catalog reaches 1.8GB to allow work to contine on the catalog that might increase the size, for example adding annotations.

Why does Mediapro crash on import? (Windows)

There was a problem with Quicktime version 7.0.4 that would cause Windows MediaPro version 3 or 3.0.1 to crash on import. This is not a problem version 3.0.2 and later of MediaPro. Quicktime 7.0.4 is no longer the current version of Quicktime.

Please make sure you are using the current version of MediaPro.

Why can't I import media files I know are supported by MediaPro?

The first thing to check is the 'Catalog Importers' dialog in the 'File' menu. This is where the media types that will be imported in an individual catalog are selected. In this example Text and Html documents are not selected so will not be imported.

Please check the file type you are trying to import appears in the list of file types in this dialog.

If you are import using 'Import: From files/folders' then make sure none of the 'Import Criteria' at the bottom of the dialog would prevent your files from being imported.

This layered Photoshop file was not saved with a composite image.

If an imported Photoshop image displays this message in MediaPro -

image

Please make sure Maximize Compatibility is chosen when saving the image in Photoshop.

This dialog will be given, in Photoshop, if 'Ask' is set for 'Maximize PSD File Compatibility' in the 'File Compatibility' section of the 'File Handling' preferences. This preference could also be set to 'Always'.

PSD Alpha channel incorrectly displayed (typically yellow)

Photoshop documents with Alpha channels can be incorrectly displayed. The Alpha channel can be intrepreted as a transparent layer, MediaPro has a preference as to which color to use to display transparency and by default this is yellow. Below is an example of how this can appear.

image

To change this you need to change the 'Use Alpha Channel' setting in - Preferences -> Media Rendering -> Images.

This will mean newly imported PSDs will have correct thumbnails. To correct existing thumbnails you will need to select them and choose 'Rebuild Item', from the Action menu. You may need to Quit and restart iView MediaPro to see the change.

Can I catalog unsupported file types?

You can catalog file types that are not supported by MediaPro by editing the custom.txt importer file.

custom.txt is found in the following locations -

Mac - (MediaPro application package contents) SharedSupport:Plug-ins:Importers

Windows - Program Files\iView MediaPro\Plug-ins\Importers

You need to add one line for each filetype you want to add. The format of the line is -

XXXX|N|Description

Where XXXX is the filetype you want to add. The most useful way to add a filetype to use the filename extension padded with a space at the end to make up four characters. So to add a support for the canvas filetype the four characters would be 'CNV '.

N is the media type as seen in MediaPro and is a number from 0 to 6. The numbers and there meanings are 0-Image, 1-Audio, 2-Animation, 3-Vector, 4-DTP, 5-Font and 6-Text. Canvas is an image type so for this example we use '0' (zero).

Description is what will appear in the 'Media Importers' dialog for this add media type and is a simple text description of the type. So simply 'Canvas' will do for this example.

So the whole line will be -

CNV |0|Canvas

When you save the custom.txt file please be careful not to change it's filetype, filename or format. You can also use the four character filetype instead of the filename extension, this is described in Appendix B of the current manual but this is generally not as useful.
