Q&A » Creating and Viewing Catalogs

Are MediaPro 3 catalogs compatible with older iView applications?

iView MediaPro catalogs are forward compatible not backwards compatible.

iView MediaPro 3 will open catalogs from older versions of iView applications.

We would not recommend opening catalogs saved in iView MediaPro 3 in older versions of iView applications. iView MediaPro 3 uses Unicode, has new fields and has settings/options not available in older iView applications. Any of which may be lost in a catalog opened by an older iView application.

If you are testing iView MediaPro 3 and have catalogs from older iView applications we recommend backing up catalogs first. If iView catalogs are opened by more than one user we recommend all users have the same version iView application installed.

What is different about Thumbanils in MediaPro 3?

In MediaPro 3.0.1 iView introduced more options for Thumbnails and included the option of Full Screen Previews.

Thumbnail and Preview options are set in the 'Thumbnails and Previews' dialog in the 'Edit' menu.

Thumbnail Size. This controls the thumbnails that are stored in a catalog and displayed in the Thumbnail view. Choose 'Variable' if you are used to the way thumbnails worked in previous versions of MediaPro. Using this setting will mean newly imported or re-built thumbnails will match the current displayed size in the thumbnail view. If you want to display thumbnails at one size but have the flexibility to scale to a larger size later on then choose a specific size in this dialog. For instance if you choose '320 pixels' you will be able to enlarge the thumbnail view up to that size at any time. If you are importing many images you may want to use the 'use built-in thumbnails' option. This will speed up import as existing thumbnails are extracted from images rather than rendered by MediaPro from the images themselves. They may be limited in size and lower quality than thumbnails created by MediaPro but for large numbers of images speed may be more important than quality.

Media Previews. Using the option to create full screen previews can be useful to view images that may be stored off-line or large images that may take a long time to render. This option stores a large preview in the catalog when an image is imported or re-built.
