Why can't I import media that I know MediaPro 1.5 supports?

The most common cause of media not importing in iView MediaPro 1.5 is an incorrect setting made in the Import Options. You can check these by going to Edit -> Import Options ... The 'Search' tab filters media as it is imported. By default all of these options are not selected, one of the criteria here could be the reason media is not importing, so try with every option deselected. The second tab could also block media from importing. Check in the 'Media Types' tab that the general type of file you are trying to import is selected.

Cataloguing PDF, EPS and AI files using Ghostscript

iView MediaPro offers various levels of support for PDF, EPS and AI (Illustrator) file formats. AI files (prior to version 9) are, in general, treated as EPS files. From version 9 onwards, Illustrator files are treated as PDF.

On Mac OS 9, iView MediaPro supports basic EPS cataloging, which includes extracting and cataloging built-in previews from EPS and AI (prior to 9) files.

On Mac OS X, iView also offers full support (including media rendering and page browsing) for PDF and AI 9 files.

iView MediaPro is a Ghostscript-aware application. Ghostscript is a system extension that enables applications to render Postscript and PDF files. Installing Ghostscript on your system enables iView MediaPro to offer full cataloging and rendering support for most PDF, EPS and AI files.

Ghostscript is distributed under the terms of the General Public License, and therefore there are no restrictions using it. This version of Ghostscript works on OS X and 9.

So here is what you need to do:

• Go to Ghostscript Plug-in and download Ghostscript.
• Uncompress the download using Stuffit Expander and copy it to Plugins -> Importers in your iView MediaPro 1.5 folder.
• Run iView MediaPro (you don't need to restart your machine). Make sure that DTP documents are enabled (in Import Options) and check the Media Importers to see PDF/EPS listed.

Ghostscript is a copyrighted work owned by Aladdin Enterprises.

Sometimes an imported picture doesn't display. Instead it only shows a paragraph, "Must be opened in Photoshop or Photodeluxe...." (in 6 languages).

These files consist of 2 layers. The first layer is the one with the text in six languages. You will need to switch to Media View, move to the second layer and press CMD-B (Rebuild Thumbnail). After this point MediaPro will use the second layer to display your image in Thumbnail View.

Files with same names (but in different folders) don't get imported in a catalog.

This issue has been fixed with version 1.4 and newer.

Can I do a mass change to the path?

Yes. Just select all files and choose "Reset Paths" in the Find menu. In the dialog, point to the folder that contains the new items.

Folder Watching does not work. When I drop a folder of new items into that folder they don't show up in the catalog.

Folder watching only works on the root level of the folder. Not on sub-folders. This is a limitation of MediaPro 1.5.x we hope to resolve in future versions.

Since I upgraded to the new version, iView will not import new files ?

You may have several copies of iView MediaPro in your Mac. Using different versions of the application can corrupt iView MediaPro's Preferences file. Locate and delete "iView MediaPro Settings" file in your "Preferences" folder. Then relaunch the new version of iView MediaPro. Everything should work fine.

Can I catalog unsupported media files?

Yes. iView MediaPro allows users to add basic cataloging support for other media file types by modifying the Custom Importer list. Thumbnail and media rendering of these files is not supported. Instead, these files will be represented by a generic icon corresponding to the file type group.

To add a file type to the Custom Importer list:
1. Locate the Plug-ins | Importers folder.
2. Open the Custom file with a text editor.
3. Add your own types at the bottom of the file.
4. For example, to add FileMaker files, type FMP3|6|FileMaker Pro
The first four characters are the file type. The next is the Media Type, which are listed at the top of the list. If you choose the wrong Media Type, MediaPro will not catalog the file. The remaining segment is the name of the program.
5. Save the text file and launch MediaPro.
6. Check the Media Type you want to import is enabled in the Media Types tab of Import Options (Edit menu).

Finding file types: The most complicated part of adding a custom importer is identifying the appropriate file type.

In OS 9.x, there is a utility in your operating system that can help you, Sherlock. Launch Sherlock (CMD-F) in the Finder. With the More Search Options dialog box open (CMD-M), drag-and-drop any file from the Finder to the More Search Options window. The file’s criteria appear in relevant boxes, including file type.

In OS X, there is no utility in the operating system that can identify file types. However, there is a shareware utility that can assist you, XRay. Drag-and-drop the file on the to the XRay window as directed by the application. Under the Show pull-down menu, select Type, Creator and Extension. This will display the file type information.
